His research interests are concerned with microwave engineering as well as with computational electromagnetics and photonics. Computational electromagnetics and photonics are disciplines where electromagnetic field theory, computer science and scientific computing blend to develop efficient software tools for investigating the interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter. Extensive simulations based on numerical solution of Maxwell’s equations is a powerful methodology used in basic and applied science, including microwave, terahertz technologies nanophotonics, photovoltaics, and metamaterials. Fast simulations are essential for the investigation of new intriguing phenomena such as surface plasmon polaritons in metals or graphene, and effects in structures containing graphene sheets or metals objects operating in terahertz region Professor Mrozowski’s current work is focused on the development of numerical techniques for solving Maxwell’s equations outperforming the state-of-the art commercial software. To this end innovative numerical algorithms geared towards multicore computer architectures and graphics processors , and advanced mathematical concepts such as reduced order models are used. Professor Mrozowski is also engaged in applied research related to microwave filter design, microwave filter synthesis, low-cost high-frequency devices (made of paper), surrogate model construction, full-wave optimization and computer aided design.

In 2007 for his contributions to electromagnetic field theory and computational electromagnetics, Professor Michał Mrozowski has been elected the Fellow of IEEE. This is an honour bestowed by the international organization of electrical and electronics engineers on researchers of exceptional achievements in the fields of electronics, telecommunications, information technologies, automatic control and robotics and electrical engineering. In Poland only 15 people have been granted this title so far.


Training of Early Stage Reserchers

Prof. Michal Mrozowski is known in Poland for research excellence and very good results in the young researchers training. He worked with 9 post-docs since 2001, 2 of whom received a 3- year fellowship for best young scientist under 35 in Poland. He was the advisor in 16 completed PhD theses – 14 of them were found (by the reviewers) to be outstanding (summa cum laude) and 4 Ph.D (all in computational electromagnetics) received Prime Minister of Poland awards (only 15 such awards are given each year in Poland) and 6 received other awards. Applicant’s PhD students received international (IEEE) and national 10 highly competitive Young Scientists Fellowships awarded by the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP). Every year FNP selects only about 100 awardees out of 800 applicants. Professor Mrozowski was one of the first recipients of the Polish Science Foundation "Master Grants" awarded only once in three years to up to top 15 academics in Poland who effectively combine world class research with training of younger staff.

  • IEEE: Awarded a prestigious title of IEEE Fellow “for the contribution to the theory of guided waves and computational electromagnetics”. IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for selected IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation. Currently there are only 15 IEEE Fellows in Poland. - An (elected) member of two IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society Technical Committees, i.e. MTT-1 Technical Committee (CAD), MTT-15 Technical Committee (Field Theory). Technical Committees consist of 10-20 experts of international renown. Served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters (2005-2006).
